7 Practical Tips to Improve Your WiFi Connection Speed

We’ve all experienced the frustration of a sluggish WiFi connection. Slow download and upload speeds can be a major hindrance, especially when you’re trying to get work done or stream your favorite shows. While your internet service provider (ISP) is responsible for your overall speed, there are practical steps you can take to improve your WiFi connection and make it run faster.

Table of Contents

1. Check Router Settings & Reduce Connected Devices

Begin by checking your router’s settings. Ensure that it is set to the correct channel and that you are running the most up-to-date firmware. Changing your router’s position and antennae can also improve signal strength. If you have multiple devices connected to your WiFi network, disconnect those that don’t need internet access. This frees up bandwidth for devices that still require internet connectivity, allowing them to access the internet faster.

2. Switch to 5GHz Band

Switching to a different WiFi frequency band is another way to improve your connection speeds. Most routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but the 5 GHz band is typically faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz, making it an ideal option for those struggling with slow connection speeds. If you’re in a crowded area with many other networks, the 5 GHz band can provide a better connection since it is less susceptible to interference. Keep in mind that the main caveat here would be a lesser connection range compared to a 2.4 GHz band.

3. Update Your Devices

Make sure that all of your devices are running the latest software and firmware updates. Outdated software and drivers can prevent your devices from connecting to the internet at their optimal speeds.

4. Keep the WiFi Router Away from Other Electronics

To reduce interference from other electronics and appliances, keep your router away from microwaves, cordless phones, refrigerators or other devices that may cause interference. You can also check if your router is set to use the correct frequency by using a WiFi analyzer app.

5. Upgrade to a Mesh Network

If you have trouble connecting to Wi-Fi in certain parts of your home or office, consider using a mesh network or range extenders to expand your Wi-Fi signal over a greater area. This ensures that your devices are always connected to the strongest signal possible, which can help improve your overall connection speed. Mesh Wi-Fi routers are an excellent option if you can afford them. Once set up correctly, turn off the Wi-Fi signal on that stock modem/router you get from your ISP so that your mesh network can divide your upload and download bandwidth according to the connected devices.

6. Upgrade Your WiFi Router

To get an even greater boost in Wi-Fi speed, consider upgrading your stock router by turning off its Wi-Fi connection and upgrading it with newer models featuring the latest technology and features such as the latest 802.11ac standard or MU-MIMO technology. These features will help achieve faster connection speeds and better range while newer models may offer more Ethernet ports not locked up by your ISP or advanced features such as parental controls. You may also consider using a dedicated router for gaming or streaming media as these are designed to provide faster speeds and reduce lag.

7. Coordinate with Your Respective ISPs

If all else fails, consider working with your ISP to upgrade your speed package so you can enjoy even faster speeds and reliability for your Wi-Fi connection.

By taking these steps, you’ll enjoy a faster Wi-Fi connection and get back to surfing the web with ease. With the right combination of hardware and software, you can maximize your internet connection’s full potential.

Reports from 9to5Google and WinFuture suggest that Google may be preparing for the release of its first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold, in June. It is possible that this phone will be introduced during the annual Google I/O event scheduled on May 10. The device is likely to come in “carbon” and “porcelain” color options and will run on Google’s Tensor G2 chip. However, it will initially only be available with 256GB storage according to WinFuture.

The rumored foldable has a 5.79-inch outer cover display and a 7.69-inch inner display when unfolded based on earlier leaks, and is expected to cost less than Samsung’s $1,800 Galaxy Z Fold 4. While pricing information is yet not revealed in the reports, rumors indicate that this device may come at a lower price point compared to other prominent foldable phones in the market.

In addition to this rumored launch, Google could also release the Pixel 7A phone alongside with three color options: carbon, cotton and arctic blue as reported by both publications. However, no official statement regarding these developments has been released by Google yet.

This rumored introduction of the Pixel Fold would put Google into an already crowded foldable smartphone market alongside brands such as Samsung and Motorola who have already released several generations of foldable devices.

Apple recently released a new feature called Clean Energy Charging with its iOS 16.1 update. The feature is designed to help iPhone users reduce their carbon footprint by forecasting carbon emissions in the local energy grid and charging during times of cleaner energy production. This, however, has not been welcomed by everyone.

Some users are upset that this feature is turned on by default after updating their iPhones and that it causes their phones to charge much slower than before. They claim that Apple is deciding how they should spend their energy for them. Nonetheless, there is a way to turn the feature off if it’s not something you’re interested in using.

The feature only kicks in when you are charging your phone at locations you are most often, like home or work, and will notify you when it does so. It will not turn on if you are charging your phone at a new location or if your charging habits vary frequently.

How to Turn off Clean Energy Charging

  • Go to your Settings app
  • Select Battery
  • Tap Battery Health & Charging
  • Toggle off Clean Energy Charging

Apple’s efforts to incorporate sustainability into its products are commendable, but some users may prefer the traditional charging method. What do you think? Share your thoughts and let us know if you prefer Clean Energy Charging on or off on your iPhone.
